Europe has long been the default destination for Americans looking to live or retire abroad. But in recent years, that assumption is quietly being questioned. In this video, Earl looks at the real reasons many Americans are choosing alternatives to Europe — and what they’re gaining, and giving up, in the process.
💰 Cost of Living Across much of Western Europe, rising rents, higher taxes, and unpredictable fees are reshaping the cost of living. Value-added tax often exceeds 20 percent, and housing costs in cities like Lisbon, Barcelona, and Valencia have climbed sharply. For retirees and fixed-income Americans, these increases can make budgeting difficult. By comparison, countries in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and parts of Eastern Europe often offer lower monthly costs, more stable rent expectations, and affordable private healthcare — sometimes at a fraction of typical USA expenses.
🍲 Lifestyle & Culture Many Americans describe a slower pace of life outside Europe, with easier access to doctors, shorter wait times, and fewer administrative hurdles. Places like Mexico, Colombia, Thailand, and Panama appeal to those who value predictability and day-to-day simplicity. The trade-off can include language barriers, infrastructure gaps outside major cities, and less formal consumer protection.
⚠️ Reality Check Leaving Europe also means giving up strong tenant protections, extensive social safety nets, and easy travel across the EU. Visa rules in other regions can change quickly, and long-term stability varies by country.
